Sept. 9th, 2005:
New Bedford needs new leadership

If we could do it again, I'd suggest a new Declaration of Independence for
New Bedford and a convention to ratify our vision. We'd want plenty of young
people to keep the dream alive, the hope well focused. Jefferson was only 33
years old when he signed the original Declaration. Over 20 percent of the
signers were 35 or younger. I am not surprised. That's why I support Matt
Morrissey for mayor. He represents a new generation of leadership, a fresh way
of doing business at City Hall.
If Matt were simply young and energetic, though, that wouldn't be enough. But
Matt has already accomplished so much. He is a true believer in the power of
education to transform lives, and I have seen him as a student and as an
administrator, fighting to create new educational opportunities for
working-class people. He has successfully served as a public and private
entrepreneur, as well.
Matt has walked the streets every day this summer, listening to the diverse
voices of New Bedford. He even created an impressive Web site for those eager to
offer their opinions electronically. Focused on the dream of what can be, he
knows we can do better.
A product of our local schools, Matt cares deeply about New Bedford, about our
dreams. And he knows he is not running to become a king, but to serve as a
dedicated steward for all those who want a better life for themselves, their
families and their neighbors.
We need Morrissey if we still believe in the dream.
