Commercial food workers,
seafarers, electrical workers,
elevator workers join to support a
new generation of leadership for New
Bedford.
Mayoral candidate Matt Morrissey
today officially announced that five
union locals representing hundreds of
workers in New Bedford and thousands
statewide have endorsed his campaign
for a new generation of leadership.
Locals 791 and 328 of the United
Food and Commercial Workers, which
represent supermarket workers; Local
2222 of the International
Brotherhood of Electrical Workers;
the Seafarers International Union;
and the Elevator Constructors have
all endorsed Morrissey.
“Working families are the
backbone of New Bedford, and I am
proud and honored to have the
support of hundreds of these
families across the community,’’
Morrissey said today. “Working
families have seen a 54 percent
increase in their property tax bills
and all they have to show for that
investment is the fourth highest
unemployment rate in Massachusetts,
a 33 percent dropout rate and 18
unsolved murders. They understand
that new energy, new ideas, and a
whole new way of doing business at
City Hall are needed to improve
their quality of life.” [read
